Each instrument has its own character and sound; instruments of the same model will all sound unique. We gather potential instruments ahead of time; tune them and have them ready for you to try in our practice room. You can take an instrument “on approval” to take to your teacher for a second opinion

All About all violins from Larsen Music
All violins have a belly (top) made from spruce with back, sides, neck and scroll carved from maple. As the quality of wood selected gets better; the instrument price increases. Generally, a stronger flame indicates a more select piece of maple. Backs can be one-piece (made from a single piece of maple), or two-piece (made from two pieces glued together at the centre joint).
Violins have a bassbar running along the inside of the belly on the left side and a soundpost standing up inside the instrument near the bridge on the right side. The soundpost is considered to be the soul of the instrument (in French, that is its name- l’âme), and drastic changes in the sound of the violin can be made by moving the soundpost by tiny increments (a trained professional should do this).
We do a complete set-up on almost all violins here at Larsen Music. We re-fit the pegs, plane the fingerboard, re-shape the nut, and cut a new bridge. We use the specifications set out by Hans Weisshauer (a world renowned restorer and of author of the definitive book on the subject). We play every instrument we set-up and only let it leave the shop when we feel it’s playing at its best.
The bow is the long misunderstood partner of the violin. Yes, the bow matters! A different bow can draw remarkably different sounds from a single instrument. When purchasing an instrument, it is important to consider the bow as well.

Violin - Larsen Music "Segreto"
The Segreto is our finest rental instrument and has earned this honour from consistently producing a clear warm tone. Each instrument has a character of its own; the varnish can range from a deep brown to a warm red. Segretos are completely set-up in our shop. Rental or purchase includes bow, case, rosin and shoulder rest. They are made in a small workshop in Beijing.

Violin - Larsen Music "Sinfonica" 
Produced in the same workshop at Allegrettos, Sinfonicas are the next level in the student violin line. They are made from select wood and have a less glossy varnish. They produce a sweet warm tone, with surprising volume for a student instrument. Rental or purchase includes bow, case, rosin and shoulder rest. These instruments can blend into the orchestra environment without standing out as a new student instrument..

Violin - Larsen Music "Ideale" 
This is the perfect starter violin. It produces a bright open sound not often found on instruments of this price range. All Ideales are set-up in our shop and come with new Tonica strings and Wittner fine-tuning tailpieces. Rental or purchase includes bow, case, rosin and shoulder rest. The Ideale is from the German company Gewa, constructed in China.

Violin - Larsen Music "Allegretto" 
From a smaller workshop in Beijing, the Allegretto is one of our sweetest sounding student violins. The backs contain a fine flame and a deep golden tone. Allegrettos arrive at our shop bare. We adjust pegs, re-shape the fingerboard as well as the nut and cut new bridges for each instrument. We string them up most often with Helicore strings, and use Wittner fine-tuning tailpieces. Rental or purchase includes bow, case, rosin and shoulder rest
