About our Music Director - Anne Schaefer
Raised in small town Saskatchewan, on a steady diet of
classical music and wheat kernels, Anne has spent most of her life studying,
teaching, composing, recording and performing music. Trained classically in
Kodalay Method, violin, piano, voice and French horn, Anne went on to teach
herself the guitar and compose angst ridden songs through the teen years, in an
attempt at “coolification”(the French horn, thick glasses and perm were serious
hindrances). Following a brief stint at McGill University in the Jazz
Performance program, Anne learned French, traveled around with different groups
performing in Canada, France, Mexico and Argentina, taught lots of lessons and
workshops, learned Spanish, moved to Argentina and continued performing,
teaching and facilitating, eventually landing in Victoria, B.C. in 2000.
Since moving to Victoria Anne has released one solo album
(generously funded by the Canada Council for the Arts) garnering national
critical acclaim, provided session support on numerous other albums, taught and
facilitated many many lessons and workshops, recorded a sophomore album
(generously funded by the Canada Council for the Arts, still in production),
toured around, collaborated with lots of great musicians and now, stepped into
the exciting new role of the Director of the Larsen School of Music.
Anne is the winner of the 2006 M award for Favorite Jazz
Artist, 2005 Island Music Award for Songwriter of the Year and Artist of the
Year, 2004 IMA Vocalist of the Year and a host of festival medals and
scholarships that made it possible to purchase a Yamaha DX21 when midi was in
it’s infancy.
Anne is continuously amazed at the incredible power of
music, loves exploring it as a professional and guide, believes that all human
beings (and many plants and animals) benefit from doing it, listening to it and
including it in their lives and relishes the opportunity to create ways to make
it a part of every community as much as possible.
Anne is also the proud parent of a really nice fifteen year
old and has developed a gluten allergy, probably from all those wheat kernels.

our instructors has had experience with teaching children and adults.
More importantly, they have demonstrated their ability to effectively

to guide students to their full potential.
All instructors at Larsen School of Music have had a criminal record
check to work with children.
Curriculum
The
curriculum at Larsen School of Music is varied and flexible for either
the adult or young student musician. If you are interested in examinations
from the Royal Conservatory of Music, Conservatory Canada or another institution,
we have instructors on staff that are capable of guiding you in most instruments. Whether you are seeking
to begin learning a musical instrument, expand the skills you already
have on your instrument or explore particular song styles/techniques,
our faculty and curriculum offer you an enjoyable musical education.
The first step in our curriculum is to identify the student's needs and
interests. The lesson coordinator will assess which faculty member is
the most suitable for the student, based on a discussion with the parent/student
regarding skill level, age, musical style interests, and musical goals.
Finally, our curriculum offers the student a number of choices for instruction. Students may enroll in one or more of the following music instruction programs:
I.
Private Lessons: These lessons are designed to meet the musical
needs and interests of the individual student. A suitable faculty member
will be assigned to meet his/her needs. You also have the choice of
selecting a faculty member on the basis of availability.
II.
Classes: Larsen Music hosts a variety of exciting group music classes throughout the year. Check out our Special Classes and Programs page for more information.

lesson billing will be based on the number of days you have a lesson in
a month. If there are four lessons in the month, you are charged

card (void cheque) or you may choose to pay in person. Lessons that remain unpaid for more than two consecutive weeks may be terminated.
